The Gift Monk’s Guide to Mobile Filmmaking

Filmmaking has never been more accessible now that most of us carry a powerful camera in our pockets everyday. Whether they’re an aspiring Youtuber or looking to shoot the next Sundance hit (a la Tangerine), you can get your friends started with these gifts for mobile filmmaking!

Rode Videomic Me

The Rode VideoMic Me is a directional microphone that plugs right into the headphone jack (sorry iPhone 7 users). You’ll get clear, crisp sound quality and be able to capture it at a greater distance. The VideoMic Me also comes with a wind sock so you can reduce pesky wind noise when outdoors. There’s no app to download, no batteries or assembly required, you’ll start capturing better sound right out of the box!

AUKEY Ora Wide Angle + Macro Lens

Phone lenses are relatively inexpensive and loads of fun to pair with your smart phones! The AUKEY Ora is a 2-in-1 lens; capture breathtaking landscapes in wide angle or the most minute details with the macro lens. This lens has a sturdy aluminum alloy body and comes with a lens cap and microfiber carrying pouch. A good phone lens should be part of every mobile filmmaking kit!

Vastar Smartphone Tripod Adapter

Stabilize your smart phone footage with this tripod adapter. The clamp is knob-adjusted rather than spring-loaded which makes it easier to handle, it rotates as well so you can capture footage both horizontally and vertically.

Arkon Tripod

Speaking of tripods, we really dig the Arkon smartphone tripod. Bend the legs into any shape to capture all sorts of perspectives.  This tripod won’t tip over even with the Rode mic and AUKEY lens on (we’ve tried it!). The mounting plate also has a bubble level on it so your shots won’t be crooked.

GoPro HERO Session

GoPro is THE standard when it comes to action cameras. The pint-sized GoPro HERO Session records high quality video and features a simple one-button control.  Additionally, it’s waterproof without a casing making it a great grab-n-go camera for any outdoor adventure. While there is a newer HERO5 Session, we’ve found that the HERO Session still holds up great and at about half the price, is a lot easier on the wallet.
